I’m often asked to sort out computers that have slowed down over time, and the causes are often quite avoidable. With a few pointers in the right direction, I can help you keep your computer well maintained and running smoothly.
Simple maintenance
Microsoft Windows comes with a few tools built in which can help you look after your computer. Disk Cleanup or Disk Defragmenter are two of them. They help keep your hard drive tidy and organised, which helps things run more smoothly. Many people don’t know about these sorts of tools, and as a result never use them.
If these programs are not used, your computer can become slower, and even unstable. So many people put up with slow computers when they don’t have to – all they need is a bit of knowledge and perhaps a one time demonstration.
Going deeper
Tools like Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter are simple to use, but with a greater understanding of how computers work, I am able to use more complex utilities to further improve your system. I use programs that go deep into the workings of your computer, to find out what’s really going on in there. Often there are programs that shouldn’t be running, or settings that need changing. These techniques are quite advanced and beyond the scope of the average PC user, but can really help when a system is slowing people down.
Upgrades
There are other options if your computer still runs on the slow side after good maintenance. I can install extra parts inside your computer that help it run more smoothly, and that’s not as expensive as you might think. My page on installing hardware explains this.
