Personal Computer Support From Marc Fowler

New infections making me look bad

Fear not, I’m not about to tell you of a nasty rash. The infection I refer to was of the computer variety.

This afternoon I returned to a customer I’d visited in March. Back then I discovered they had infections on their computer. I installed a very effective malware removal tool called Malwarebytes’ Anti Malware and used it to clean their computer.

The same customer called yesterday to say they were having all sorts of problems with the same PC. When I got to it this afternoon, I found most programs wouldn’t open and Malwarebytes’ Anti Malware had disappeared.

Certain these problems were caused by infections, I reinstalled Malwarebytes’ Anti Malware. Within seconds it told me infections had been found. Not long after, however, a quite legitimate looking warning appeared, telling us the removal tool I’d installed was a severe infection! It said Malwarebytes’ must be removed immediately to protect the computer. The only option was ‘OK’ which would remove it. This explains why the program had disappeared recently.

The sort of infections I remove for people on an almost daily basis are getting so clever these days, they know what programs are used to remove them and find ways to fight back! Defense mechanisms if you will. I’ve seen many block Malwarebytes’ Anti Malware from downloading, installing or running, but never before have I seen one warn the user that it’s an infection that must be removed!

I’ve installed Malwarebytes’ Anti Malware for so many people, I worry others may end up being told the same thing and think I’ve infected them!
